Great question. We enjoy anal without lube except on rare occasions. Both of us enjoy “the dance”… the slow, deliberate, penetration of her ass. Just a little saliva on her hole. The rectum will naturally increase the production of mucose when repeated insertions depleats it. That mucose is slippery, which can act as a lube.
For beginners, lube is mandatory until your body can generate enough mucose to keep up with the strokes, at least for the initial penetration.
I experienced that while fingering myself in the bathroom: water is a no-go, and it’s really hard to insert my fingers dry. But if I use a bit of saliva, it just slips right into it. Also, if I’m clean enough, I can even feel the mucose and smell it (doesn’t smell like shit. It’s strong, but not unpleasant).

Well, depends a lot on my level of arousement (is that even a word) - with some foreplay, the region certainly can get wet enough on it’s own, but for a quickie some lube (or lots of lube) is certainly appreciated. Personally I like the water based type…
