I’ve started wondering about the following:
If newcomers are only allowed to post in introduction, and we then have a conversation with them in their own introductory post, won’t that somewhat defeat the usefulness of the categories?
Maybe it’s something that will go away once we have more active conversations in general, but right now, it seems with new members all kinds of convos happen in their intro post, which would fit better in other categories.
I’ve noticed this happening as well.
I think it’s great that everyone has their own thread where you can read about each other and discuss personal topics. However, it can be problematic when conversations drift too far off-topic, with unrelated discussions taking over.
I guess It would help if approved members took responsibility for keeping threads focused and started new topics when discussions move in a different direction.
Any ideas or suggestion how to improve this?
Drifting from main topics in threads can happen easly as people are curious about other details, but we are also reluctant to open dedicated threads for single-opinions. Of course, some of those can turn into threads on themselves, but sometimes they don’t.
Unless we have a way to open subthreads that can be tagged or linked to other topics, the only way I can think of is moderation and reminding people to post only related to that topic.
I’ve thought about that as well, gentle reminders, but we can’t really tell the newcomers (who can only post in introductions) to post in relevant threads. And telling regular members not to engage with newcomers would be bad as well, after all, this is how we want to get to know them.
A head scratcher for sure.
